Abstract

Early afterdepolarisations are abnormal electrical behaviours that can contribute to heart failure and sudden cardiac death. The seminar analyses how these patterns arise in detailed rabbit and human ventricular myocyte models, which require a combination of mathematical and numerical techniques because of their high dimensionality.

The results are connected with a reduced Luo–Rudy cardiomyocyte model. Bifurcation analysis and fast–slow decomposition reveal the dynamical mechanisms associated with the emergence and transition of early afterdepolarisations.

The work also develops methods for decomposing realistic high-dimensional models and explores theoretical strategies for controlling pre-arrhythmic states.
