As a joint research centre of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of the Basque Country (EHU), the IBF provides a stimulating environment to train new scientists and to carry out innovative biochemical and biophysical research in a new research building with cutting-edge facilities located in the Leioa campus of the EHU.
With the FBB accredited as a Basque Excellence Research Centre (BERC) by the Basque Government, the IBF and FBB partnership enjoys a strong national and international reputation.

The “Fundación Biofísica Bizkaia/Biofisika Bizkaia Fundazioa” (FBB) is a private institution created in 2007 as an instrument to carry out, support and finance scientific research, training, and outreach in the field of biophysics. Since its creation, the goals and activities of the FBB have been aligned and coordinated with those of the IBF.
Composed of internationally renowned researchers, the Scientific Advisory Board of Instituto Biofisika helps evaluate overall research performance, and advises the directive team of the Institute on scientific goals and strategic planning, including talent recruitment and investments in scientific equipment and infrastructure.
