Abstract

Giant viruses possess unusually large particles and genomes. The seminar presents an integrative study of the marine giant virus PkV-RF02, whose linear double-stranded DNA genome is about 583 kilobases and whose capsid is roughly 200 nanometres in diameter.

High-resolution cryo-electron microscopy and cross-linking mass spectrometry were combined to map the viral architecture and protein–protein interactions. The analysis helps assign functions to structural components, many of which remain poorly characterised.
